“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” - Maya Angelou
Semester at Sea can be summed up in five words: the world is our classroom.
It is a voyage around the world, offering a study-abroad experience to college students and life-long learners. I’m going along for the ride as a faculty member, teacher, mentor, colleague, and field trip facilitator. After a year of preparing my courses, I think I’m ready to impart some information to my students - but more importantly, I am ready to learn!
Let there be no mistake: this is not a cruise and it is not voluntourism. It is a journey that combines interdisciplinary courses, lectures and seminars with hands-on in-country experience. It is a journey to learn about the world, specifically 11 ports and countries, while gaining cultural competence and a global perspective. If that sounds too academic, let’s just say I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to learn from others around the world. Their perspectives, habits, challenges, and solutions. Their traditions and beliefs. Their politics and religions. Their ideas of health, food, family, sustainability, diversity, and social justice. Life.
I hope you will bring your curiosity, open mind and open heart along with me.
